How to walk a patient with a gait belt

Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.

Nursing (NCLEX)

A gait belt gives you a safe grip. If the patient starts to fall, guide them down.

Step by step

  1. Prepare

Non-slip shoes, clear path, devices ready. [1]

  2. Belt

Around the waist, two fingers under it. [1]

  3. Position

Slightly behind on the weaker side, hand on the belt. [1]

  4. Walk

Short distance first, watch for dizziness. [1]

  5. If they fall

Widen your stance, pull them close, slide them down your leg to the floor. [1]

  6. After

Check for injury before getting them up; report. [1]

Practice it in VMS

In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
