How to teach home blood pressure monitoring

Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.

Home readings help diagnose and treat high blood pressure. They are only useful if the patient measures the same way each time.

Step by step

  1. Choose the device

Validated upper-arm cuff in the right size. [1]

  2. Prepare

No caffeine, exercise or smoking for 30 minutes, empty bladder, sit 5 minutes. [1]

  3. Position

Back supported, feet flat, arm resting at heart level, cuff on bare arm. [1]

  4. Take readings

Two readings 1 minute apart, morning and evening, for about a week. [1]

  5. Log

Write or save all readings with date and time. [1]

  6. When to call

Very high readings or with chest pain, weakness, vision change or headache: seek care. [1]

  7. Teach-back

Ask the patient to show you how they will do it. [2]

Practice it in VMS

In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
