How to teach a patient with the teach-back method
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
"Do you understand?" almost always gets a yes. Teach-back checks your explanation, not the patient.
Step by step
Plain language
Short sentences, no jargon, the two or three most important points. [1]
One chunk at a time
Explain one point, check it, then go on. [1]
Ask them to explain back
"I want to be sure I explained this well. Can you tell me how you will take this medicine at home?" [1]
Listen
Let them answer in their own words. Do not correct mid-sentence. [1]
Re-teach if needed
Explain again in a different way and ask again, until it is right. [1]
Use it often
For medicines, discharge instructions, warning signs and self-care. [1]
Document
Write what was taught and that teach-back was correct. [1]
Common errors
- Asking "Do you understand?".
- Explaining everything at once.
- Blaming the patient for not understanding.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
