How to manage a seizure
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
Most seizures stop on their own. Protect the patient and time it.
Step by step
Protect
Move objects away, cushion the head; do not restrain. [1]
Time it
From the start. [1]
Nothing in the mouth
No fingers or objects. [1]
After
Recovery position, airway, oxygen, glucose. [1]
Status epilepticus
Seizure over 5 minutes or repeated without recovery: benzodiazepine per protocol (for example IM midazolam). [1]
Look for causes
Low sugar, injury, drugs, alcohol, fever, pregnancy. [1]
Common errors
- Restraining.
- Objects in the mouth.
- Not timing.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
