How to interview a patient with sleep problems
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
Sleep problems are a symptom. Find out which part of sleep is broken and why.
Step by step
Introduce yourself and get consent
Ask about a typical night. [1]
Which problem
Falling asleep, staying asleep, waking early, or sleepy all day. [2]
Snoring and pauses
Loud snoring, stopping breathing, morning headache suggest sleep apnea. [3]
Habits
Bedtime, screens, caffeine, alcohol, naps, shift work. [3]
Mood and pain
Depression, anxiety, pain, nighttime urination. [3]
Medicines
Steroids, stimulants, decongestants, sleeping pills. [3]
Summarize and plan
Explain sleep habits and tests if needed. [1]
Common errors
- Prescribing pills before asking about habits.
- Missing sleep apnea.
- Not asking about mood.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
