How to interview a patient who is coughing blood
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
Coughing blood can be minor or life-threatening. Check how much and if the patient is stable before the details.
Step by step
Check stability
Breathing, saturation, amount (cupfuls is massive). Call for help if severe. [1]
Introduce yourself and protect yourself
Mask on for possible TB. [2]
Is it from the lungs?
Coughed up and frothy (lungs), vomited (stomach), or from the nose. [3]
Amount and course
Streaks or clots, how often, since when. [3]
Associated symptoms
Fever, chest pain, breathlessness, weight loss, night sweats, leg swelling. [1]
Risk factors
Smoking, TB exposure, recent travel or surgery, blood thinners. [1]
Summarize and plan
Explain imaging and next steps. [4]
Common errors
- Not checking how much.
- Missing TB.
- Not asking about clots.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
