How to handle a patient refusal
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
A competent adult may refuse care. Your job is to make sure the refusal is informed and documented.
Step by step
Capacity
Alert, oriented, not impaired, understands and can explain the choice. [1]
Explain risks
Including death, in plain words. [1]
Offer options
Other transport, follow-up, call back any time. [1]
Try again
Involve family or medical control. [1]
Document
Assessment, vital signs, what was explained, signatures and witness. [1]
No capacity
Follow protocol and law for implied consent. [1]
Common errors
- Accepting refusal from an impaired patient.
- No risk explanation.
- Poor documentation.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
