How to do an N95 seal check
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
An N95 only protects you if it seals to your face. A seal check every time you put it on confirms it is working.
Step by step
Use your fit-tested model
Wear only the model and size you passed in your annual fit test. [1]
Put it on
Cup the respirator over nose and chin. Place the top strap high on the head and the bottom strap below the ears. [1]
Shape the nose piece
Press the metal strip with both hands to mold it to your nose. [1]
Positive pressure check
Cover the mask and breathe out gently. It should bulge slightly with no air leaking at the edges. [1]
Negative pressure check
Cover the mask and breathe in. It should pull in slightly toward the face. [1]
Fix leaks
If air leaks, adjust the straps or nose piece and check again. Do not enter if you cannot get a seal. [1]
Common errors
- Skipping the seal check.
- Wearing a model you were not fit-tested for.
- Facial hair under the seal.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
