How to do a physical exam by video
Other platforms explain it with text and video. In VMS you practice it on the patient.
A video exam can show a lot if you guide the patient well. Knowing its limits tells you when to see the patient in person.
Step by step
Prepare in advance
Ask the patient to have good light, a quiet room and any home devices ready. [1]
Observe first
Look at general appearance, breathing effort, skin color and speech. [1]
Guide the camera
Ask the patient to move the camera close to the area and use a flashlight if needed. [1]
Guide self-exam
Ask them to press on the belly, move joints or walk across the room while you watch. [1]
Use home devices
Ask for readings from a thermometer, pulse oximeter or blood pressure cuff. [1]
Know the limits
Arrange an in-person visit if the exam cannot answer your question. [1]
Document the method
Write that the exam was done by video and what was seen. [1]
Common errors
- Poor lighting or camera angle.
- Not using available home devices.
- Not switching to in-person care when needed.
Practice it in VMS
In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
