How to assist with intubation

The assistant makes intubation safe: equipment ready, patient oxygenated, tube confirmed.

Step by step

  1. Prepare

    Suction, oxygen, airway equipment and backup, drugs, monitoring. [1]

  2. Preoxygenate

    High-flow oxygen for several minutes. [1]

  3. Position

    Ear level with the breastbone notch. [1]

  4. Assist

    Hand equipment, suction, external laryngeal pressure if asked. [1]

  5. Confirm

    Waveform capnography, chest rise, breath sounds. [1]

  6. Secure

    Note the depth at the teeth; sedation after. [1]

Common errors

Practice it in VMS

In VMS you do this on the patient, not on paper: every step goes on the checklist with a score, and in Teach mode Blocky tells you what comes next.
